A Survey on the Needs of Health Promotion of Kang-buk Ku in Seoul





Abstract
This survey study was conducted to assess the needs of health promotion among residents in a district of Seoul. Data were collected on 2,231 individuals of 608 households, which comprises about 1% of total residents of the surveyed district. The survey is targeted for three different population groups, namely, total population, the elders over 65 years old and the mothers who have children under 6 years old. Study results from the survey is as follows.
According to the survey done for the all age groups, average age of the survey subjects was 34.95 years old and those who were older than 60 was 14%. Out of total subject, 50.7% were married, only 1.9% was illiterate and 69.1% were enrolled in the medical insurance program for self employed. Out of total adult residents 21.3% reported to have at least one kind of chronic disease. Among those who are suffering from chronic diseases, arthritis/muscular-skeletal disease was ranked the top with 7.3%, following by hypertension with 5.2% and diabetes with 2.3%. The accident rate for the past year was 4.0% with the traffic accidents ranking the top with 49.2% and followed by the falls with 32.3%. Out of total adult residents, 30.3% smoke, 43.1% drink and 77.5% do not exercise regularly. And 31.3% take a meal irregularly and 26.4% eat saltly. The 68.3% answered that they are under stress and they sleep 6.93 hours per day on the average. Most of those surveyed (62.9%) have never had physical examination done and 65% of women subjects never had pap smear and never did breast self exam.
According to the survey done for elders, 15.3% reported to have urinary incontinence and 3.8% bowel incontinence, 59% of those who had urinary incontinence reported to experience more than once a week. They did not express any difficulties of carrying out ADL. But for IADL, 8.2% and 7.7% need complete help from someone for their financial management and shopping. It was found that 56.3% of the elders can not climb the stairways by themselves, but 72.7% of them answered that they have to use stairways at their residence and 39.9% of them did not have side rails for stairways. It was also found that 18.0% had inappropriate lighting around their residence and 71.6% of them had slippery floor in their kitchen and bathroom.
According to the survey for the mother who have child under 6 years old, 26.9% regarded
childrearing as a burden and 20.2% responded that they are having difficulties of childrearing due to their lack of knowledge. They answered that they need some professional help in the areas of emergency and disease management, providing proper environment for child development, sex education, dental care, and accident prevention. Abnormal behaviors of the children were speech impediment, fingernail biting, learning retardation, sleeping disorder, temper tenderum, abnormal appetite, attention disorder, and finger sucking in order.
